The Equivalence between Form and Function of the Explanatory Modal Particle Noda Meaning 'Conclusion' in the novel Laskar Pelangi

This study aims to investigate the occurrence of the Japanese linguistic feature known as noda which conveys the meaning of 'conclusion' in the novel Niji no Shounentachi (the Japanese translation of the novel Laskar Pelangi). The focus of this study is to explain the functional background of Indonesian language forms that can be equated with noda in the sense of 'conclusion'. The data in this study consist of narrative sentences containing noda that express ‘conclusion’ and narrative sentences in the source text that express ‘conclusion’ in textual form (possessing linguistic markers). The main theories used in this study are the explanatory modality of noda proposed by Masuoka. Liu on the function of noda in discourse, and the theory of textual equivalence by Baker. This study identified several linguistic forms that can be equated with the use of noda signifying ‘conclusion,’ namely the conjunctions 'maka' and 'sehingga', the pronoun 'demikian', the phrases dengan 'demikian' and 'oleh karena itu', and the adjective 'baru'. Based on these findings, the function of noda in this study explains the indirect relationship between the explanatory element (Q), which takes the form of the author’s subjective attitude regarding the element being explained in the context (P).
